Honeymoon – Day 5: Sydney, Australia

We woke up on the fifth day of our honeymoon to views of sunshine and sparkling water from our room at the Four Seasons Hotel Sydney, and decided it was the perfect day for a trip to the famous Bondi Beach.

We had seen countless photos of Bondi Beach in books and magazines, but were blown away by how more more beautiful it was in person – the sand and water was pristine, and the crashing waves were awe inspiring.

We set up camp on the beach and spent the day alternating between swimming, walks on the beach, and beach lounging.  It was hands down the best beach I have ever been to (until we went to the Whitsunday Islands on the Great Barrier Reef… but Bondi is still definitely top 2!)

In the late afternoon, we decided it was time for some refreshments, and went to a beach cafe for coronas and a light lunch.

After lunch, we walked along the picturesque trails near Bondi Beach before heading back into the city to freshen up for the evening.

We had a great dinner at Mizuya Restaurant – the lychee martinis were the perfect nightcap to a wonderful day in the sun.

Unfortunately, as we discovered the next day, we had spent a little too much time in the sun.  Lesson learned – don’t mess with the Australian sun, especially if spending the day at Bondi Beach!  My sunburn, barely visible when I went to bed after our day at Bondi Beach, got progressively worse before peaking THREE days after my sun (over)exposure, then finally gradually starting to get better four days after I got the burn.  I couldn’t sleep for two nights due to the pain so trust me when I say wear sunscreen, reapply often, and seek shelter from the sun after just a couple of hours – I was wearing SPF 50 and thought I had reapplied it often enough, but still destroyed my normally porcelain-esque skin.

Before bed, we relaxed in the front the amazing view from our hotel room at the Four Seasons Sydney of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge awash in twinkling lights.

I was sad that we would be leaving Sydney in the morning, but was excited about our upcoming adventures in the Blue Mountains, Gold Coast, and Whitsunday Islands!  Besides, we would be back in Sydney for a few days at the very end of our Honeymoon – so I told myself I was not saying goodbye to the city I had fallen in love with, just ‘ciao for now’!

You are right about not under-estimating the Australian sun! Glad you had fun though despite the burn. As a Sydney-sider myself, it is lovely to see local favourites through new eyes! Wish you both all the best.

  2. Black is the New Black

Thanks for stopping by Emily, how fantastic it must be to live in Sydney! I certainly learned my lesson about the Australian sun ; )

  3. Oooh Bondi is one of those places a traveler must see! I love the wood train by the rocks and next to the surf…

Sorry about the sunburn, I get burns on my face even with spf 50 too, so now I wear a hat too. And always sunglasses!

Bondi was so wonderful, it definitely lived up to all the hype! The sunburn was sooooooo bad, I never had one like that before where it got progressively worse for 3 days before finally starting to heal – I certainly learned my lesson! You’re right – the hat is so key when in the sun, I bought one later on our trip and no more burns! xoxo

  4. When I’m home in NZ, I slather SPF 85 sunscreen and keep out of the sun until 4pm. I’m fair like you. The sun in Australia and NZ is really harsh. Despite the lack of sun here, I enjoy heading out to the park, go for walks etc all the things I find it hard to do in NZ.

Ah, I didn’t realize you were from NZ, how cool! Isn’t that where ‘flat whites’ come from? I became addicted on our honeymoon ; )

      xo

  5. Really enjoy these daily excursions from Austria to Australia. Your pics are great and I truly appreciate your effort to write it all out so thoroughly! You two are just too cute – might repeat myself, but one can literally feel how much you’re beaming with joy. :-)

  6. You look so beautiful – I can’t tell you are sunburned at all :) Poor you! I’m the same way – get burned easily. Loving your Australia photos!

Thanks Katherine! The sunburn wasn’t too bad this day, but somehow kept getting worse for several more days! We porcelain ladies need to slater on the SPF! xo

The Australian sun is very strong- people burn so fast. I was at the beach on the w/e (Gold Coast- Main Beach) and there were a LOT of burnt people.

Glad you loved Sydney- but their beaches aren’t a patch on the Gold Coast! x

Ahhhh, the GC! We were fortunate enough to spend 5 days there, it is truly spectacular. Tres jealous that you are so close to it! xo

  12. I just found you through twitter and see that you’re also traveling around Australia! It’s amazing to see my hometown through your eyes – I have to go to Bondi this weekend!
And don’t worry nearly everyone gets a little burnt at Bondi – the Australian sun is so nice but deceiving with what it can do!
I hope you enjoy the rest of your honeymoon!!
